Today's vehicles impose significantly greater demands than older designs: stop-start systems cycle the battery dozens of times per commute, and the increasing number of always-on modules — telematics, heated seats, parking sensors, alarm systems — draw continuously even with the ignition off. The classic failure mode is a battery that starts the car reliably in summer but struggles at the first cold morning of autumn, when both the electrolyte's chemical efficiency and the engine's cranking resistance work against each other simultaneously. A battery that takes noticeably longer to turn the engine, or one that has needed a jump-start more than once in a season, is typically within weeks of outright failure. Cold cranking amps (CCA) and reserve capacity ratings must match the vehicle's OE specification, because undersized batteries shorten starter motor life and cause voltage sag that triggers false electronic fault codes. Battery fitment is determined by several parameters that must all match: case size (length, width, height), terminal polarity (whether the positive terminal is on the left or right), cold cranking amps (CCA), and battery technology (standard lead-acid, EFB for entry-level stop-start, or AGM for advanced stop-start and regenerative braking systems). The critical distinction is technology class: an aftermarket EFB or AGM battery from a recognised brand is a safe substitution; an aftermarket conventional battery in a car designed for AGM will be damaged by the vehicle's regenerative charging strategy within months.
On many modern vehicles — particularly those from Volkswagen Group, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz — the battery management system must be informed when a new battery is fitted, otherwise the charging voltage remains calibrated to the old, partially degraded unit. This registration is performed with a diagnostic tool. Skipping it does not prevent the car from starting, but it does shorten the new battery's service life and can trigger false fault codes relating to the charging system. Slow engine cranking on a cold morning — where the starter turns the engine noticeably more sluggishly than usual — is the earliest and most reliable indicator. Other signs include a battery warning light on the dashboard, dim interior lighting when the engine is off, electrical accessories behaving erratically, or the engine failing to start after the vehicle has been parked for more than a day or two. A battery more than four years old that has already needed one jump-start should be tested under load before winter, as the chemical degradation that allows summer starts often accelerates sharply in cold temperatures.
