Propshaft buying guide — what to know before you buy
The propshaft (drive shaft or cardan shaft) transmits engine power from the gearbox to the rear differential on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Worn universal joints, centre bearings, and coupling rubbers cause vibrations, clunking, and drivetrain noise. Replacement restores smooth, vibration-free power delivery.
Propshaft failure symptoms
Propshaft problems typically manifest as vibrations and noise that vary with vehicle speed. The universal joints (UJs) and centre bearing are the most common failure points.
- Vibration that increases with speed, felt through the floor and seats
- Clunking or banging when changing between drive and reverse
- Squeaking or chirping from dry universal joints at low speed
- Rumbling or grinding from a worn centre support bearing
- Visible play when the propshaft is grabbed and rotated by hand
Propshaft repair options
Propshafts can often be repaired by replacing the universal joints and centre bearing rather than fitting a complete new shaft.
- Universal joints can be pressed out and replaced individually
- Centre bearings are available separately on multi-piece propshafts
- Coupling rubbers (flex discs) on some vehicles are a common low-cost repair
- If the shaft tube is dented or bent, the complete propshaft must be replaced and balanced
