The drive shaft boot (CV boot) is a flexible rubber or thermoplastic cover that protects the CV joint from dirt and retains its grease. A split boot allows grease to escape and contaminants to enter, destroying the joint within weeks. Early boot replacement prevents the much more expensive joint or entire driveshaft replacement.
CV boot failure is extremely common. The boot flexes constantly as the wheels turn and steer, eventually cracking and splitting.
Split boots can be fitted without removing the driveshaft, saving significant labour time. However, traditional boots require driveshaft removal.
