Engine Oil buying guide — what to know before you buy
Engine oil lubricates, cools, and protects internal engine components from wear. Using the correct viscosity and specification is critical — the wrong oil can cause premature wear, DPF clogging, or warranty issues. At CarParts247 we stock engine oils from Castrol, Mobil, Shell, and Total.
Choosing the right engine oil
Every engine has a manufacturer-specified oil grade (e.g., 5W-30) and approval (e.g., VW 504.00, MB 229.51). Using the correct specification ensures proper lubrication and emission system compatibility.
- Check your owner's manual for the exact viscosity grade and OEM approval
- Modern engines often require low-SAPS oil to protect the DPF or catalytic converter
- Fully synthetic oils provide the best protection for turbocharged and direct-injection engines
- Do not mix different oil types unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it
- Always change the oil filter at the same time as the oil
Oil change intervals and best practice
Service intervals depend on driving conditions. Short trips and city driving contaminate oil faster than motorway cruising. Many vehicles now have variable service indicators that measure oil condition.
- Typical interval: 10,000–15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first
- Severe-use conditions (short trips, towing, dusty environments) shorten the interval
- Check oil level monthly — consumption of up to 0.5 L per 1,000 miles can be normal on some engines
- Run the engine warm before draining to remove more contaminants
- Dispose of used oil at a recycling centre — never pour it down the drain
