Antifreeze — mixed with water to form engine coolant — lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of the cooling system fluid, protecting the engine from frost damage in winter and boil-over in summer. It also contains corrosion inhibitors that protect aluminium, iron, copper, and rubber components throughout the cooling system.
Antifreeze is based on ethylene glycol or, in some formulations, propylene glycol. The critical variable is the inhibitor package — OAT (Organic Acid Technology), HOAT (Hybrid OAT), and IAT (Inorganic Additive Technology) formulations are designed for different metals and seal materials. Using the wrong type causes inhibitor incompatibility, corrosion, and sludge formation. Always check which type your vehicle manufacturer specifies.
A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is the most widely recommended ratio, giving approximately −36 °C freeze protection and +107 °C boiling point. A 60/40 mix gives greater cold-weather protection but reduces heat transfer efficiency — more antifreeze is not always better.
Inhibitors in antifreeze deplete over time. IAT (traditional green) coolant should be changed every two years. OAT and HOAT formulations (typically pink, red, purple, or blue) last five years or longer. Using the coolant beyond its service life allows acidic by-products to form, attacking aluminium components and softening water pump seals.
Never mix different colours or types of coolant without checking compatibility. Mixing OAT and IAT formulations cancels out inhibitor packages and can cause gel formation that blocks the cooling system.
Ready-mixed and concentrate antifreeze in OAT, HOAT, and universal formulations are available on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £99, and 14-day returns on unused products.
