The water pump circulates coolant continuously around the engine, radiator, and heater circuit, maintaining the engine at its correct operating temperature. A failing water pump leads rapidly to overheating, which is one of the most expensive forms of engine damage if not caught in time.

How the water pump works

The water pump is a centrifugal pump driven either by the timing belt, serpentine drive belt, or — on some modern hybrid and electric-assist vehicles — by an electric motor. A rotating impeller draws coolant from the bottom radiator hose, pushes it around the engine block and cylinder head, and returns it to the top of the radiator. Flow rate is proportional to engine speed.

Coolant flow also passes through the heater matrix, allowing cabin heating, and through the EGR cooler and turbocharger on diesel engines. All of these circuits are starved if the water pump fails.
