Water Pump Guide

Last updated: 24 April 2026

The water pump circulates coolant continuously around the engine, radiator, and heater circuit, maintaining the engine at its correct operating temperature. A failing water pump leads rapidly to overheating, which is one of the most expensive forms of engine damage if not caught in time.

How the water pump works

The water pump is a centrifugal pump driven either by the timing belt, serpentine drive belt, or — on some modern hybrid and electric-assist vehicles — by an electric motor. A rotating impeller draws coolant from the bottom radiator hose, pushes it around the engine block and cylinder head, and returns it to the top of the radiator. Flow rate is proportional to engine speed.

Coolant flow also passes through the heater matrix, allowing cabin heating, and through the EGR cooler and turbocharger on diesel engines. All of these circuits are starved if the water pump fails.

Symptoms and failure modes

Coolant leaking from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump body indicates a failing shaft seal — the weep hole is designed to allow a small external leak as warning of seal failure, before coolant can enter the engine oil via the bearing. A whining or grinding noise from the pump, play in the pulley when pushed by hand, or a seized pulley all indicate bearing failure. Overheating with no visible coolant leak may mean the impeller has failed internally — separating from the shaft or corroding away.

Water pumps driven by the timing belt are typically replaced as part of the timing belt kit service. Belt-driven pumps share the timing belt's replacement interval.

Replacement tips

Always replace the sealing gasket or O-ring and use the correct coolant type and concentration when refilling. Bleed the cooling system properly after replacement to remove air locks, which can cause local overheating even when the overall coolant level is correct. Use the registration lookup to find the correct water pump for your engine — timing-belt-driven and auxiliary-belt-driven variants differ and are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of a failing water pump?

Common signs include coolant leaking from the pump area, engine overheating, a whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine, and steam from under the bonnet. A weeping pump or play in the pulley usually means the bearing or seal has worn.

What does the water pump do and when should it be replaced?

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to keep the engine at its correct operating temperature. It is often replaced together with the timing belt, since both are driven by the same belt and share access labour.

How do I find the right water pump for my car?

Enter your registration above and we will show only the water pumps and coolant pumps confirmed to fit your exact vehicle. Always check the seal or gasket is included, as fitment varies by engine.

How much does a water pump replacement cost?

The price of a water pump depends on your exact vehicle and the brand you choose. Enter your registration above to see parts confirmed to fit, then compare prices from the brands we stock on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £99.
