The glow plug relay (or timer relay) controls power to the diesel engine's glow plugs during cold starting. It switches high current to the glow plugs for a timed pre-heat period and cuts power after the engine starts. A faulty relay can cause hard starting in cold weather, repeated glow plug failure, or glow plug warning light faults. The relay is inexpensive and straightforward to replace.
When the ignition is turned to position II, the ECU or a dedicated timer relay energises the glow plugs for a pre-determined warm-up period, typically 1–10 seconds depending on ambient temperature.
Before replacing the relay, confirm that the relay rather than the glow plugs themselves is at fault.
