The air conditioning compressor pulley spins continuously on the engine auxiliary belt, driven by the crankshaft. When the air conditioning is switched off, the electromagnetic clutch disengages and the compressor shaft remains stationary whilst the pulley freewheels on its bearing. A worn or seized pulley bearing causes a persistent squealing or grinding noise even with the air conditioning off, and can generate enough heat to damage the serpentine belt. Denso, Sanden, and NRF supply replacement compressor pulleys and bearing assemblies that can be fitted without removing the compressor from the vehicle or recovering the refrigerant.
Distinguishing between a pulley bearing fault and other belt-driven component failures requires a systematic approach. The AC compressor pulley is unusual in that it spins at all times, regardless of AC system status.
The pulley bearing is a sealed unit pressed into the pulley body. To replace it, remove the drive plate (held by a central bolt), then withdraw the pulley using a puller. Press the old bearing out and the new one in, then refit the pulley and drive plate. The refrigerant circuit does not need to be opened for this repair.
If the pulley body itself is cracked or the bearing seat is damaged, a complete pulley and bearing assembly is more cost-effective than fitting a new bearing into a damaged carrier. Complete assemblies are available pre-assembled and fit directly onto the compressor shaft.
