The AC compressor clutch coil — also called the compressor clutch coil or magnetic clutch coil — is the electromagnetic solenoid that engages and releases the compressor clutch when the air conditioning is switched on and off. When energised by the AC control module, it creates a magnetic field that pulls the clutch plate against the compressor pulley, engaging the compressor. A failed coil means the clutch never engages — the compressor pulley spins freely but the shaft does not turn and the AC produces no cooling. The clutch coil is easy to test with a multimeter. A functioning coil has a resistance of approximately 3–4 ohms (12 V systems). An open circuit (infinite resistance) or short to earth (near-zero resistance) confirms coil failure.
The clutch coil is mounted on the front of the compressor body and usually held by a circlip or a central bolt. It can be replaced without removing the compressor or discharging the refrigerant system. Verify the new coil's resistance matches the original specification before fitting, and check the clutch air gap after assembly.
