Leaf springs are a type of suspension spring made from one or more curved steel plates (leaves) that flex under load, absorbing road shock and supporting the vehicle's weight. They are commonly found on the rear axle of vans, pick-up trucks, and light commercial vehicles, where load-carrying capacity is a priority.
A multi-leaf spring pack consists of several graduated-length steel strips clamped together. The main (longest) leaf has eyes at each end that mount to the vehicle chassis — one end fixed, the other on a sliding shackle that allows the spring to change length as it flexes. Under load the leaves bow and flex progressively, with additional leaves engaging as load increases. This gives a variable spring rate that is soft under light loads and stiff under full load.
Modern designs sometimes use a single parabolic leaf with a carefully profiled cross-section that provides a similar progressive rate with less weight and inter-leaf friction.
A broken leaf spring leaf causes the vehicle to sag on one side, reducing ground clearance and causing the axle to sit at an incorrect angle. This produces handling that pulls to one side, abnormal tyre wear, and in severe cases allows the axle to contact the chassis bump stop at all times, giving an extremely harsh ride. A knocking or creaking from the rear suspension on bumps can indicate leaves separating from the pack or worn centre bolt and U-bolt hardware.
Corrosion is the most common cause of leaf spring failure in the UK. Salt and moisture penetrate between the leaves, and rust pits on the leaf surface act as stress risers for fatigue cracks.
Leaf spring replacement requires axle support and careful work around the U-bolts and centre bolt. Replace the U-bolts, centre bolt, and shackle bushes at the same time — reusing corroded hardware leads to early re-failure. Use the registration lookup to confirm the correct spring pack specification for your vehicle's load rating and axle type.
