Blower Motor Buying Guide

Last updated: 24 April 2026

The blower motor (heater fan motor) drives the ventilation system that delivers hot or cold air into the cabin through the heater core and air conditioning system. A failed motor results in no airflow from the vents, regardless of temperature settings. Replacement restores cabin heating, demisting, and air conditioning airflow.

Blower motor failure symptoms

Blower motors fail from worn brushes, seized bearings, or electrical faults. Debris in the fan housing can also cause noise and failure.

  • No air from the vents at any fan speed setting
  • Fan only works on the highest speed setting — blower resistor failure
  • Squealing, whining, or rattling noise from behind the dashboard
  • Intermittent fan operation, sometimes working and sometimes not
  • Burning smell from an overheating motor

Diagnosis and replacement

If the fan only works on high speed, check the blower motor resistor or transistor module first — this is a cheaper and more common failure than the motor itself.

  • If fan works on high only, replace the blower resistor (not the motor)
  • Check for leaves, debris, or rodent material in the fan housing before fitting a new motor
  • The motor is usually located behind the glovebox or under the dashboard on the passenger side
  • Test the new motor on all speed settings before reassembling the dashboard

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my heater fan only work on high?

The blower motor resistor (or electronic speed controller) has failed. This component drops voltage to reduce fan speed. When it fails, only the full-voltage high speed works because it bypasses the resistor.

Can I drive without a blower motor?

Yes, but you will have no forced ventilation, heating, or demisting capability. In cold or wet conditions, this is a safety concern as the windscreen will fog up quickly.

Where is the blower motor located?

Usually behind the glovebox or under the dashboard on the passenger side. Some vehicles require partial dashboard removal for access.

What causes blower motor noise?

Worn bearings cause whining, debris in the fan cage causes rattling, and worn brushes cause intermittent operation. Leaves and rodent nests are common foreign objects found in the fan housing.
