Their function is straightforward but load-critical: they position the bumper at the correct height and depth relative to the body, and they transmit the forces from low-speed impacts into the chassis in a controlled manner. Brackets are commonly made from steel or reinforced plastic, and even a minor parking contact is enough to crack or distort them — leaving the outer bumper cover sitting at a visible angle or with uneven gaps to the wing and bonnet lines. Because the bracket is hidden behind the bumper cover, damage often goes unnoticed until a subsequent collision test or MOT inspection reveals the misalignment. Replacing a bent bracket is considerably less expensive than fitting a new bumper cover, making correct identification worthwhile. The most obvious sign is a bumper cover that sits noticeably out of alignment — one corner sitting lower than the other, or a gap to the adjacent wing or door that is wider on one side. This misalignment often becomes apparent after a low-speed parking impact that appeared minor from the outside. Rattling from behind the bumper at low speed on uneven surfaces can indicate a bracket that has cracked and is moving under load. On older vehicles, visible rust through the bumper cover gap or around the bracket attachment point on the chassis rail also warrants inspection.
