Tucked behind the dashboard, the heat exchanger for interior heating — commonly called the heater matrix — is a miniature radiator through which engine coolant continuously flows. Cabin air passes across its fins, absorbing heat before the blower motor distributes it through the vents. Because it operates at full coolant system pressure and temperature every time the heating is on, a small internal crack or a corroded tube joint can develop into a slow seep that coats the inside of the windscreen with a sweet-smelling oily film, or escalates into a steady drip onto the front passenger footwell carpet. The latter symptom is often the first obvious sign of failure, along with a noticeable drop in coolant level with no external leak visible.
