Recirculating ball and worm-type steering boxes found primarily on older rear-wheel-drive cars, light commercial vehicles, and certain Mercedes-Benz and BMW models route steering input from the box to the wheel hubs via a relay rod — and the centre rod assembly is the connecting link that joins the relay rod or pitman arm to the inner ends of the track rods on each side. Unlike the rack-and-pinion geometry common on modern front-wheel-drive cars, this parallelogram linkage geometry depends on the centre rod maintaining precise length and spherical joint integrity to keep toe angles within specification across the full range of suspension travel. Wear in the rod end ball joints produces the classic symptom: a vague, wandering steering feel that requires constant minor corrections on a straight road. The most noticeable sign is imprecise, floaty steering on straight roads — the car wanders and demands small constant corrections rather than tracking steadily. A worn ball joint at either end of the rod will produce a knock or clunk from the front of the car over sharp bumps, felt through the steering wheel.
