The tie rod assembly connects the steering rack to the steering knuckle, transmitting steering input to the front wheels. It consists of an inner tie rod (attached to the rack) and an outer tie rod end (connected to the knuckle). Worn tie rod components cause play in the steering, uneven tyre wear, and failed MOT inspections.
Tie rod wear is progressive. The ball joints at the inner and outer ends develop play as the socket and ball surfaces erode.
When replacing tie rod components, always mark the position of the lock nut before removal. This provides an approximate toe setting for driving to the alignment shop.
