The steering angle sensor — abbreviated SAS or steering position sensor — measures the rotational angle and speed of the steering wheel and transmits this data to the electronic stability programme (ESP), electric power steering (EPS), and adaptive headlight systems. The ESP uses the steering angle to determine the driver's intended direction and compare it against actual yaw rate and lateral acceleration, intervening if the vehicle departs from the intended path. A faulty or uncalibrated SAS disables the ESP and EPS assist calibration, triggering warning lights and degrading vehicle dynamics. CarParts247 stocks steering angle sensors from Bosch, Continental, and Hella for a range of modern vehicles.
Because the SAS is safety-critical, the vehicle management system monitors its output continuously and disables dependent systems at the first sign of abnormal data.
Unlike most sensors, the steering angle sensor always requires a calibration (zero-point set) procedure after replacement. With the vehicle on level ground and the steering wheel pointing straight ahead, a diagnostic tool is used to set the sensor's straight-ahead reference. Without this step, the ESP cannot calculate whether the vehicle is understeering or oversteering and remains disabled.
Calibration is also required after any steering, suspension, or wheel alignment work that changes the straight-ahead steering position.
