The steering box — also called the steering gear box — converts rotary steering wheel input into lateral movement of the steering linkage on vehicles with a recirculating-ball or worm-and-sector steering system. Found on older passenger cars, vans, and trucks where rack-and-pinion geometry is impractical, the steering box provides durable, high-load steering at the cost of less direct feedback than a rack. Wear in the ball circuits or sector shaft introduces play, causing vague steering feel and difficulty holding a straight course. CarParts247 stocks OEM and remanufactured steering boxes from TRW and ZF for a range of commercial and older passenger vehicles.
Wear in the steering box manifests as play at the steering wheel and deteriorating straight-line stability. The box can often be adjusted to reduce play before replacement becomes necessary.
Most steering boxes have an adjuster screw on the sector shaft cover that takes up wear in the sector-shaft-to-worm mesh. With the front wheels off the ground and the steering pointing straight ahead, back off the lock nut, turn the adjuster in small increments, and recheck wheel play at the rim. Do not over-tighten — tight spots through the rest of the lock indicate the box is past adjustment and needs replacement.
A power-steering leak at the sector shaft seal can sometimes be fixed with a seal kit without full box removal, but significant internal wear requires a remanufactured or new unit.
