The steering shaft joint connects the intermediate steering shaft to the steering rack or column, transmitting driver input whilst accommodating the angular offset between the two components. Unlike the column joint closer to the cabin, the lower steering shaft joint is exposed to road splash and heat from the exhaust manifold on some layouts, accelerating wear. A worn joint creates noticeable play in the steering, an off-centre steering wheel, and noise over bumps. Meyle, Febi Bilstein, and Lemförder manufacture replacement lower steering joints and shaft assemblies for a wide range of European and Asian cars. Early replacement prevents progressive wear that can spread to the rack itself.
Steering play caused by a worn shaft joint feels different from rack play: it is most apparent at the wheel rim and tends to produce a knock or click on road irregularities rather than a constant vague feel.
Raise the vehicle safely and have an assistant apply gentle alternating torque to the steering wheel whilst you observe the shaft joints from below. Any rotational play at the joint before the rack pinion moves identifies the worn component.
The pinch bolt must be fully torqued to prevent the joint from separating under load. On many vehicles the splined joint has a flat that must align with the pinch bolt — inserting the shaft incorrectly prevents full engagement of the splines. Double-check alignment before final tightening.
