The crank pulley (harmonic balancer or crankshaft damper) bolts to the front of the crankshaft and drives the serpentine belt. It also dampens torsional vibrations from the crankshaft. A failing crank pulley causes belt misalignment, accessory failure, and can throw the belt entirely. The rubber damping ring separates over time.
The crank pulley has a rubber damping layer between its inner hub and outer ring. When this rubber deteriorates, the outer ring slips or separates.
Crank pulley replacement requires holding the crankshaft while loosening the pulley bolt, which can be very tight.
