The fuel pre-supply pump — also called the fuel lift pump or low-pressure pump — draws fuel from the tank and delivers it at low pressure to the high-pressure injection pump on diesel engines, or to the main electric fuel pump on petrol systems. Its job is to maintain a steady, bubble-free supply of fuel without which the high-pressure system will cavitate, lose pressure, and cause hard starting or cut-out under load. Pre-supply pumps can be mechanically driven from the camshaft or electrically operated. Bosch, Facet, and Pierburg supply replacement lift pumps for diesel and petrol applications. Diagnosing a faulty pre-supply pump before condemning the expensive high-pressure pump can save considerable expense.
Pre-supply pump failure is often gradual. Symptoms are most apparent under high fuel demand conditions.
Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the low-pressure fuel line between the lift pump and the high-pressure pump. Crank the engine and observe the pressure. The lift pump should immediately develop its specified pressure — typically 0.3-0.8 bar depending on application. No pressure confirms pump failure; low pressure suggests a blocked filter or suction restriction.
Always change the fuel filter at the same time as the lift pump — a blocked filter was the likely cause of pump overload and premature failure. Prime the new pump with fuel before starting to avoid running dry. On mechanical lift pumps, check the actuating lever and its eccentric for wear at the same time.
