Brake pipes — also called brake lines or brake tubing — carry hydraulic brake fluid at high pressure between the master cylinder, ABS modulator, and brake callipers or wheel cylinders. Most OE brake pipes are made from double-walled steel (bundy) tubing or, on newer vehicles, nylon-coated steel or PTFE-lined stainless. External corrosion is the most common failure: UK road salt attacks bare steel pipe at the underbody, causing pitting that eventually leads to a burst pipe and complete loss of braking. Replacement brake pipes and pre-flared brake tubing kits are available from Febi and aftermarket suppliers, and are among the most safety-critical components on the vehicle.
Brake pipe corrosion develops from the outside inward. Surface rust is normal and cosmetic; the concern is deep pitting that compromises wall thickness. The underbody and areas near the rear axle and body seams are the highest-risk zones on UK vehicles.
The MoT tester checks brake pipes for corrosion, kinking, and inadequate support. Pipes that are corroded to the point where wall integrity is doubtful fail the MoT. Pre-emptive replacement of corroded pipes prevents both MOT failure and the far more serious risk of pipe burst under emergency braking.
Pipe replacement is challenging due to the routing and the need for correctly flared connections. On UK vehicles, corroded union nuts often round off, requiring cutting and new union fittings. After any pipe replacement, the complete circuit must be bled to remove air.
