Underseal is a protective coating applied to the underside of a vehicle's body, wheel arches, and floor pans to prevent corrosion from road salt, moisture, and stone chip damage. Applying underseal is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend a vehicle's life in the UK's road salt environment.
Bitumen-based underseals are the most widely used type — they set to a hard, flexible film that resists stone chips and seals out moisture. They are easy to apply by brush or spray gun and are available in black. Rubber-based underseals remain more flexible over time and are better suited to areas with significant movement. Wax-based cavity wax and wax injection treatments serve a complementary role for box sections and sills that underseal cannot reach.
Professional-grade underseals offer better adhesion and durability than DIY aerosol products. When applying with a spray gun, thin the product as directed and apply in multiple coats.
Thorough preparation is the key to long-lasting underseal. Remove all loose rust with a wire brush or needle scaler, treat remaining rust with a rust converter, and allow to dry completely before applying underseal. Mask off brake components, driveshafts, exhausts, and towing connections — underseal on these components causes problems and may create fire risks near the exhaust.
Apply underseal in a warm, dry environment for best adhesion. Allow full cure before the vehicle is driven — typically 24 hours for most bitumen products. Aerosol underseal for touch-up repairs is convenient for small areas and spot repairs around wheel arches.
