The oil cooling thermostat regulates the flow of engine oil through the oil cooler, ensuring oil reaches operating temperature quickly and does not run excessively hot under load. It opens at a calibrated temperature to divert oil through the cooler and closes to bypass it when oil is cold. A stuck-open thermostat keeps oil below optimal temperature, impairing lubrication and increasing engine wear. A stuck-closed thermostat causes oil overheating, thinning, and reduced film strength — accelerating bearing and bore wear.
