The water pump shaft seal prevents coolant from leaking along the pump shaft between the impeller chamber and the bearing housing. When this seal fails, coolant weeps from the small drain hole on the underside of the water pump body — a tell-tale sign that the seal is gone. Left unrepaired, coolant ingress reaches the pump bearing, accelerating its destruction and eventually causing complete pump failure. Most water pumps have a small weep hole drilled through the housing between the bearing and the seal. This is intentional — it prevents a failed seal from forcing coolant directly into the bearing. Coolant or a white residue (dried coolant) at this weep hole is the primary indicator.
If the pump bearing is noisy, the impeller vanes are corroded, or the pump has accumulated significant mileage, replacing the complete pump is the more practical repair — the additional labour to change the seal versus the full pump is minimal. Seal-only replacement makes sense on younger, lower-mileage pumps where everything else is serviceable.
Seal replacement requires the pump to be removed and disassembled. Press out the old seal carefully without scoring the bore, then press the new seal in squarely to the same depth.
