The throttle position sensor (TPS) reports the angle of the throttle butterfly to the ECU, enabling it to calculate the correct fuel injection quantity and timing. A faulty TPS causes erratic idle, hesitation, surging, and poor throttle response. Replacement restores smooth, predictable engine response across the RPM range.
The TPS is a potentiometer that develops dead spots and wear patches over time, causing inconsistent voltage signals to the ECU.
The TPS is mounted on the throttle body and is usually secured with two screws. Replacement is straightforward on most vehicles.
