The engine oil level sensor — also called the oil level sensor or oil level switch — monitors the quantity of oil in the sump and warns the driver via the instrument cluster if the level falls below a safe threshold. On many modern engines it also measures oil quality (degradation) and oil temperature. A failed oil level sensor or oil level switch can either generate a constant false warning that causes driver alarm or, more dangerously, fail to warn of genuine oil loss. Older vehicles use a simple float-and-reed switch mounted in the sump or oil pan, producing a binary signal when oil drops below a minimum mark. Modern vehicles increasingly use capacitive or resistive sensors that measure oil level continuously and may also report oil quality and temperature to the ECU.
If the oil warning light comes on with a verified correct oil level, check the sensor connector for corrosion and water ingress before replacing the sensor. A multimeter test of sensor resistance compared to the specification chart for oil temperature will confirm whether the sensor is within tolerance.
