The vacuum pump seal prevents engine oil from leaking past the drive shaft of the brake vacuum pump, which provides servo assistance for the braking system on diesel and some petrol engines that lack manifold vacuum. A leaking Seal, vacuum pump causes oil consumption, contamination of the brake servo or intake system, and in severe cases loss of brake servo assistance. The seal is an inexpensive component but its replacement requires vacuum pump removal. CarParts247 stocks vacuum pump seals from Febi Bilstein, Elring, and LuK Repset.
Oil leaking from the vacuum pump can present in several ways depending on where the seal sits and how severely it has degraded.
Remove the vacuum pump from the cylinder head — typically three or four bolts on most diesel engines. Withdraw the pump body and carefully lever out the old shaft seal. Press the new seal squarely into its recess using a correctly sized socket. Lightly oil the new seal lip before fitting the pump. Replace the pump-to-head gasket at the same time — it is included in most seal kits and ensures a leak-free joint.
