The sump plug — also called the oil sump screw plug, oil drain plug, or sump drain plug — is the threaded fastener at the base of the oil sump that allows engine oil to be drained during a service. Although a small component, a cross-threaded or stripped sump plug causes an oil leak that can empty the sump and cause catastrophic engine damage. Replacing a damaged plug or its copper or aluminium sealing washer is essential maintenance.
