The oil pressure regulating valve — also called the oil pressure relief valve — is a spring-loaded bypass valve built into the engine block or oil pump body that limits maximum oil pressure to protect seals, bearings, and the oil filter from being subjected to excessive pressure at high engine speeds. If the valve sticks open, oil pressure drops dangerously low. If it sticks closed, pressure can spike and blow oil seals. Symptoms include low oil pressure warning lights, tapping from the top end of the engine, and oil leaks from weakened seals. Elring, Febi Bilstein, and Victor Reinz supply replacement oil pressure regulating valves and associated gaskets for a wide range of engines.
The valve consists of a spring, a plunger or ball, and a seat machined into the pump body or block. At normal operating pressure the spring holds the valve closed. When oil pressure exceeds the design limit — typically 4-6 bar — the plunger lifts against the spring and bypasses excess oil directly back to the sump.
Connect an oil pressure gauge to the engine block pressure port. Warm the engine and measure pressure at idle (minimum typically 1 bar) and at 3,000 rpm (typically 3-5 bar). Pressure below or above the specified range indicates a valve or pump fault — not just the dashboard warning light, which activates at a dangerously low pressure threshold.
The valve is accessed via a threaded plug in the oil pump body or engine block. On engines where the valve is inside the oil pump, the pump must be removed. Drain the engine oil before starting. Inspect the plunger and spring for wear or damage and replace both if the spring is compressed or the plunger is scored.
