The air filter housing (airbox) contains and supports the engine air filter element, channels incoming air across the filter media, and usually includes a temperature-controlled fresh/warm air intake flap. Cracks in the housing, a poorly seated lid, or a failed air intake duct allow unfiltered air to bypass the filter and enter the engine, causing accelerated bore and valve train wear. Replacement housings are available for most vehicles.
