A tow bar (towbar) is the structural assembly bolted to a vehicle's chassis that provides the coupling point for towing a trailer, caravan, or horsebox, and for fitting cycle carriers and rear cargo platforms. In the UK, towbars fitted to vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1998 must carry EC type-approval certification. Tow bars are available in three main configurations: fixed, detachable-neck, and retractable — each offering a different balance between permanent availability and aesthetics when not in towing use.
A fixed tow bar is permanently attached and always visible behind the vehicle. It is the simplest and lowest-cost option, suitable for frequent towers. A detachable-neck tow bar allows the tow ball and neck assembly to be removed when not in use, leaving only a small flange against the bumper. A retractable tow bar uses a powered or manual mechanism to swing the tow ball under the bumper when not in use, preserving the clean rear appearance of the vehicle.
The tow bar's approval is limited by the vehicle's own towing capacity as stated in the owner's handbook. The nose weight (the downward force the trailer's coupling exerts on the tow ball) must not exceed the vehicle's permitted nose weight or the tow bar's rated nose weight, whichever is lower. Overloading the tow bar or exceeding nose weight limits affects handling and stresses the vehicle's rear subframe.
A tow bar requires an electrical connection to supply the trailer's lights. In the UK, the 13-pin ISO 11446 socket is standard on caravans and modern trailers; older trailers may use a 7-pin socket. Vehicles with trailer-stability control may require a dedicated towbar-wiring module that communicates with the vehicle's CAN bus rather than a simple bypass relay loom. Fitting an incorrect loom can trigger fault codes on modern vehicles.
