What the kit contains

A complete repair kit typically includes one or two CV-joint boots (inner and outer), stainless steel or plastic clamps, a sachet of high-temperature lithium grease, and in some cases a replacement circlip or snap ring. Premium kits also supply a new spider joint or tripod housing when the joint itself is worn.

Fitting a drive shaft repair kit

The driveshaft must be removed from the vehicle to slide on a new boot unless you use a split-boot type. Remove old grease thoroughly, inspect the joint bearings for pitting, pack with the supplied grease, and seat the boot into its grooves before tightening the clamps. Torque inner and outer clamps evenly to avoid distorting the boot lip.

If the joint feels notchy or clicks during the boot inspection, replace the full joint or shaft rather than just the boot — a compromised joint will fail regardless of how well the new boot is fitted.

When to repair versus replace

A repair kit is cost-effective when the joint is undamaged and the boot has split cleanly without allowing grit ingress. If the car clicks on full lock or vibrates during acceleration, the joint bearings are already worn and a full shaft replacement is the correct repair.
