The EGR valve position sensor monitors the exact position of the EGR valve pintle, providing feedback to the engine management system so it can accurately control the flow of recirculated exhaust gases. Without precise position feedback, the ECU cannot deliver the correct EGR rate for each engine load condition, causing rough running, increased fuel consumption, and elevated NOx emissions. A faulty position sensor triggers fault codes, may cause the EGR valve to default to fully closed (fail-safe mode), and illuminates the engine warning light. Pierburg, Wahler, and Bosch supply replacement EGR valve position sensors and complete EGR assemblies with integrated sensors for a wide range of diesel and petrol engines.
The ECU uses the position sensor signal continuously whilst the engine is running. Even a brief signal interruption can trigger a fault and enter the ECU's fault memory.
The sensor typically outputs a variable voltage (0.5-4.5V) proportional to valve position. Measure the signal voltage with a multimeter or oscilloscope whilst commanding the valve to open and close with a diagnostic tool. An erratic or non-proportional voltage signal confirms sensor failure.
On many modern EGR valves the position sensor is integrated into the valve body and cannot be replaced separately — the entire valve must be replaced. On older designs the sensor may be a bolt-on unit. Confirm whether a separate sensor or a complete valve assembly is the correct solution before ordering.
