The output shaft — also called the mainshaft or transmission output shaft — carries the final drive gears and delivers drive from the gearbox to the propshaft or driveshaft. It runs in precision bearings and is sealed at its exit from the gearbox casing by an output shaft oil seal. A worn output shaft bearing produces a speed-proportional whine or rumble that changes with road speed. A failed output shaft seal causes gearbox oil loss that can, if unchecked, lead to bearing seizure and catastrophic gearbox failure. Elring, Corteco, and FAG supply replacement output shaft oil seals and bearings for a wide range of manual gearboxes.
Output shaft problems manifest as noise or fluid loss. Early diagnosis is straightforward — both are detectable without special tools.
The output shaft oil seal sits at the point where the shaft exits the gearbox casing. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles it is typically accessible after removing the propshaft flange. On front-wheel-drive vehicles it is accessed after removing the driveshaft. Drain the gearbox oil before starting to prevent spillage when the seal is removed.
Bearing replacement is more involved and typically requires gearbox removal and disassembly by a specialist. If the bearing has failed, inspect the shaft and housing for scoring — a damaged race surface prevents new bearings from lasting.
