A ball hitch — also called a tow ball or coupling head — is the spherical steel ball mounted on a towbar that engages with the trailer or caravan's hitch socket, forming the primary mechanical coupling between the towing vehicle and the towed load. Correct ball diameter (50 mm is standard for most European applications), ball height, and maximum noseweight rating must all match the trailer's requirements and the vehicle's towing capacity. A worn, corroded, or incorrectly installed ball hitch is a serious safety risk. CarParts247 stocks replacement tow balls and coupling head assemblies for factory and aftermarket towbars across a wide range of cars and light commercials.
Tow balls undergo significant wear in service. Lateral and vertical forces from a hitched trailer progressively wear the ball's contact surface, and the flat base can corrode around its mounting bolts.
European trailers and caravans use the 50 mm ball diameter specified in ISO 1103. The tow ball must be rated for at least the trailer's maximum gross train weight and the tongue (noseweight) loading. In the UK the coupling head must also carry a type-approval mark (EC-type-approval or equivalent).
Fitting a tow ball is straightforward but must be done correctly. Incorrect torque on the mounting bolts is a common MOT failure point. After fitting, check that the coupling head locks securely onto the ball and operates the breakaway cable hook correctly.
