Steering Column Buying Guide

Last updated: 24 April 2026

The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering rack or box, transmitting the driver's input to the front wheels. It also houses the ignition switch, indicator stalks, and often an intermediate shaft with a universal joint. Worn or damaged column components cause play, noise, and imprecise steering.

Steering column problems

Steering column issues can arise from worn universal joints, damaged bearings, or failed locking mechanisms. Symptoms range from clunking to complete loss of steering input.

  • Clunking or play felt in the steering wheel that is not from the rack or track rods
  • Steering column locks in position or fails to adjust (tilt/reach mechanism fault)
  • Grinding or clicking noise when turning the wheel from lock to lock
  • Ignition switch or key barrel issues caused by worn column components
  • Steering wheel not centred or at an angle after driving straight

Column repair and replacement

Steering column work requires care around the airbag system. Always disconnect the battery and wait for the capacitor to discharge before working near the steering wheel airbag.

  • Disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes before working near the steering wheel airbag
  • Check the intermediate shaft UJ (universal joint) first — this is the most common wear point
  • Lubricate UJ joints if accessible — some are sealed and must be replaced when worn
  • Ensure the clock spring (airbag spiral cable) is correctly centred on reassembly

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes steering column clunking?

The most common cause is a worn universal joint in the intermediate shaft between the column and the steering rack. This creates play and a clunking sensation when changing steering direction.

Can I replace just the intermediate shaft?

Yes, on most vehicles the intermediate shaft is a separate component that can be replaced without removing the entire column. It is the most commonly replaced column part.

Is steering column work dangerous?

The column houses the steering wheel airbag. Always disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes for the airbag capacitor to discharge before working in this area.

Why does my steering wheel not return to centre?

This can be caused by worn top strut mounts, tight steering column joints, or an alignment issue. The steering column UJ is a common culprit if it binds in certain positions.
